Description
Photographers and journalists from international news media organisations crowd round a waiting area at Comoro airport. They are covering a ceremony where Xanana Gusmao, leader of the FALINTIL resistance movement, and representatives of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) farewelled the last generals of the Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia, or TNI) to leave East Timor. The TNI received international criticism for failing to prevent the extensive violence that followed the announcement of the East Timorese referendum result in September 1999: they remained in East Timor as INTERFET arrived to restore order, withdrawing from the territory over the course of September and October 1999.
