History / Summary
Related to the service of George Edward Chard, born Maryborough, Queensland on 20 March 1917. Chard enlisted at Maryborough on 14 August 1940. He served with 2/15 Battalion in the Middle East, at Tobruk and El Alamein, where he was badly wounded, struck by shrapnel in the chest. He was not expected to live during the first six months but was returned to Australia where he spent two years in Concord Repatriation Hospital. Shrapnel and scraps of uniform were removed from his chest and lungs during this period. He was discharged on 19 December 1943.
