The shaded outline of a person on an execution wall riddled with bullet holes in the abandoned Qalat Al-Salman prison. The prison was built in the early 1980s, and housed many prisoners, mainly Iraqi citizens accused of being Iranian citizens living in Iraq without permission or Iranian prisoners of war. Basic necessities were provided, and until the end of 1988, relatives were allowed to visit each month and supply the prisoners with other conforts such as radios, televisions, cameras, stationery and literature, however, given the remote location and lack of an access road to the prison, visiting was extremely difficult. In 1986 Saddam Hussein declared an amnesty where prisoners were to be released, however the majority of them were given a militia uniform and were taken to unknown destinations and never heard from again. Over 3,000 prisoners were held in Qalat Al-Salman, and only 650 are to have been released back into Iraqi society, however they were never issued with proper papers declaring them to be Iraqi citizens.
