British soldiers rest in the shade of camouflage netting propped up next to their armoured vehicles as they watch a cricket match between members of the Australian 2nd Cavalry Regiment and the British Light Dragoons at Camp Smitty. This game is the first in a series of five one-day, 25-over games in a competition known as the 'Desert Ashes' . The Australians had laid a concrete wicket and the boundaries were indicated by a length of coconut matting, and the equipment was supplied by Cricket Australia and the England Cricket Board. The Australians won this game and eventually won the series 4-1.The Union Jack and the Australian flag are both flying in the background. Camp Smitty was a multinational camp located approximately 7 kms from the town of As Samawah. The camp was set up by the Americans in early 2003 adjacent to an abandoned train depot, and was later named in honour of Lance Corporal Jonothan L Smith, a US Marine who was killed after his truck was hit with an improvised explosive device. The camp was occupied by Dutch troops between July 2003 and March 2005, when it was handed over to the British. Australian troops occupied the camp in April 2005 until it was closed in May 2006 and the AMTG was relocated to Dhi Qar Province.
