Description
A purpose built Japanese style fox hole, one of approximately 45 fox holes and Japanese style bunkers built on various sites on North Brook Island for use by volunteers and goats, who were then exposed to mustard gas. In November 1943, Lieutenant F S (Freddie) Gorrill (UK), Commanding Officer of 1st Field Trials Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), went to New Guinea to assess the terrain, enemy dugouts and available intelligence on Japanese protective measures. These were recreated during the three Brook Island trials in early 1944.
