Description
Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (later Lieutenant (Lt)) Harry Laffer Swinburne, 19th (later 29th) Battalion of Shepparton, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 14 March 1916. On 2 March 1917, on the Somme front, he was killed in action, aged 29. On 9 April 1917. he was posthumously Mentioned in Despatches by Sir Douglas Haig for gallantry under heavy fire on the nights of 23 and 24 of November 1916. Lt Swinburne is buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery, France.
