Description
Unidentified sappers of 17 Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), working on Route 2, having a lunch break. One of their members prepares the midday meal over a fire in an improvised cooking pot. Known as a 'train crash', the men have combined some of their tinned meat rations into one pot and added a quantity of curry powder for flavour. The discarded empty ration boxes are visible in the background. Some local children have joined the group, possibly looking for a meal.
