German unteroffizieren rank bayonet tassel (Troddel) : Ville-Sur-Ancre
Description
Yellow cotton woven strap with black vertical strips, with woollen tassel knot at end.
History / Summary
The bayonet knot or Troddel identified the battalion and company that the soldier belonged to, with variations also denoting rank and the State from which the man originated. It was attached to the bayonet frog. The use of the Torddel declined during the war years. This example was worn by German a unterofficer. It was removed from a German prisoner at Ville-Sur-Ancre in 1918 (possibly April) by members of D Company, 22 Battalion, AIF.
