Bugle : Private H C Pix, 10 Battalion, AIF
Standard copper and brass bugle. The bell is punch engraved '6568 BUGLER H.C. PIX. 21/10 [21st Reinforcements/10 Battalion] BATTALION AIF'. Manufacturer's details and broad arrow symbol inside a 'D' are impressed on top near bell end. Two green bugle cords are knotted to the rear tube.
Bugle used by 6568 Private Harold Charles Pix, a plumber, of Adelaide who enlisted on 14 August 1916 at the age 18 years, 5 months, with the consent of his parents, Charles and Evelyn. Assigned to the 21st Reinforcements for the 10th Battalion, Pix embarked for overseas service from Port Melbourne on 21 October, arriving in England 2 months later. After training in England, Private Pix joined 10 Battalion in France in late April 1917 when they were in the Bullecourt area.
He suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh in action on 9 May 1917 and did not rejoin his unit again until 18 August. Only a month later, on 20 September during the unit's assault at Polygon Wood, he was shot again, this time in his left knee and was evacuated to England. This wound was serious enough for Pix to be returned to Australia and he was discharged from the AIF on 6 June 1918.
