Description

Pair of dark green British Army issue cold weather woollen inner trousers. These wool-knit trousers were designed to be worn between outer trousers and underwear. There are two horizontal cotton loops, each 113mm in length, sewn onto the front of the rib waist band which widens at the rear. Inside the rear of the waistband are two white cotton labels. Printed in black on the first label are the words, '"TROUSERS INNER" For Hygiene - these trousers are to be worn only over Drawers Pyjama type or other washable undergarments. Dry clean if possible or wash carefully when instructed to do so.'. Printed in black on the second label are the words, 'TROUSERS INNER SIZE 6 Height. 5' 7" - 5' 10" Waist. 34" - 37" Seat. 41" - 44", a broad arrow, H. & E. LTD. LEICESTER'. There is a brown wool gusset and the fly is fastened by four exposed plastic buttons.

History / Summary

These trousers, issued for use in very cold weather conditions, were worn by Lance Corporal G C Ralston MM during the winter of 1952. Gavin Carmichael 'Toby' Ralston was born at Seaham, via Maitland, NSW on 4 April 1928. He was a K Force volunteer and served with 1 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, in Korea between 7 April 1952 and 24 March 1953. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions in more than two dozen patrols into No-Man's-Land during the battalion's tour, including a patrol in September 1952 that attempted to recover Captain Phillip Greville and his men, who had been captured by the enemy.
