Group portrait of members of the 66th Training Battalion. Identified is 2589 Private (Pte) Alfred Sydney Thomas (fifth from left, back row) of Footscray, Vic. Also identified is Indigneous soldier (fourth from left, back row), 2141 Pte Alfred Jackson Coombs. Pte Thomas, of Footscray, Vic, enlisted on 20 May 1916 and embarked from Melbourne, Vic, with the 5th Reinforcements, 59th Battalion on 25 September 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire. He returned to Australia on 7 February 1919. Pte Coombs, a labourer from Antwerp, Victoria, embarked from Melbourne with the 4th Reinforcements, 60th Battalion on 1 August 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova (A67). He was wounded in action in France on 2 September 1918. He returned to Australia on 27 July 1919.
