Field cooking tin : German Army
Description
Small tin with inset press-on lid. The tin has a partial field grey-green finish, and originally contained a mixture of wax and methylated spirits.
History / Summary
German trench cooker captured by Australian troops in the attack on Hamel, 4 July 1918. The small tin contained a compound of wax and methylated spirits which when lit would produce enough heat to boil water or warm a meal. As the compound quickly evaporated if exposed to the air, it was necessary to keep the tin sealed while not in use.
