Description

Model made from flat sheets of 1 mm thick copper, forming an elongated vertical box. Each side panel is wired to its neighbour at the top and bottom with a celluloid viewing panel let into the proper left side. The top of the box is covered by a tapering chimney and a closing plate with handle. Both can be removed by withdrawing the wire bars which run through both them and the main box from one side to the other. A corrugated flue fits into the upper section of the box, secured with a pair of wire bars, and can also be removed. A line of 10 drilled ventilation holes are located towards the base at front and rear, and a small fire door is cut into the lower rear panel.

History / Summary

This model illustrates one of the many inventions of 12096 Private Alexander Worsfold, 9th Australian Field Ambulance. The prototype for this device was made at Armentieres out of ordinary corrugated iron with a curved shelf which quickly destroyed all kinds of refuse and was not easily detected by the enemy.
