Description

The world's largest helicopter Mi-26, Heavy Military Transport Helicopter, sitting on the tarmac at Dili was leased from the Russians by the United Nations (UN) and code named ‘Halo’. The helicopter has a crew of five, can carried 82 fully equipped soldiers, or 60 wounded stretcher patients. The helicopter first entered service in 1980 and has a flight capacity of 800 km. It has a carrying capacity of 20, 000 kg and carries no armaments. The Mi-26 was used to carry Australian Light Armoured Vehicle 25 (ASLAV-25) and troops to various locations. This group of 21 photographs relate to the service of Captain (Capt) Gregory Michael Knowles, who completed two tours of duty, 1999 to early 2000 with Charlie Company, 5/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, (5/7 RAR) and in 2002 with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR).
