As summer gets under way in Korea, the troops of 28 British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade are taking time off from training and working on their Kansas defence line positions to prepare for the 1st Commonwealth Division Athletic Carnival. The carnival will be held on 26 June, and meanwhile, unit athletics contests are being held to select representatives for the big meeting. An athletics field in Korea is a far cry from the grassy ovals and cinder tracks of Australia. Normally it is a reasonably flat piece of valley, bordered by overgrown paddy fields, and an inch or so deep in fine red dust. Few of the soldier-athletes have spikes or shorts, and hurdles etc., are often improvised, but competition, in gym shoes, socks or bare feet, is just as keen as home. Here the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) is holding its elimination contest . 52613 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) J 'Blue' Lamont of Support Company 3RAR, clears the bar in the pole vault at 8 feet 6 inches. L Cpl Lamont is from Merredin, WA.
