Description
Portrait of German artist Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack (1893-1965) teaching painting in his studio at Geelong Grammar School. He was a member of the Weimar Bauhaus school of art and design and studied under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger. He had fought for Germany in the First World War, winning an Iron Cross medal, but because of his part Jewish background he was forced to leave for London in 1936. He, along with 2000 other German speaking civilians, was transported to Australia in 1940 on the ship Dunera. Initially interned at Tatura, in 1942 he went on to teach art at Geelong Grammar School and spent the rest of his life in Australia.
