Description
A boy recovers in Dili Hospital after being shot in the leg, allegedly by members of the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army). His hospital case notes are under his pillow. Following the announcement of the referendum result in favour of independence at the beginning of September, pro-Indonesian militias launched a campaign of arson, murder and destruction across the territory, allegedly with the collusion and cooperation of Indonesian military forces. Australian forces were deployed to East Timor on 20 September as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET); an Australian led international mission to bring peace and stability to the former colony under a United Nations mandate.
