Description

Six men view the remains of ten supporters of East Timorese independence, allegedly killed by anti-independence militia and rogue Indonesian forces, and incinerated in the back of a truck at Lake Tacitolu. The lake, near Dili, was allegedly the site of many killings during the period of Indonesian occupation. The level of violence increased sharply following the referendum of 30 August 1999, leading to the intervention of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET). In May 2002, Lake Tacitolu became the venue for the independence ceremony for the new nation of Timor Leste (East Timor). The man on the left has a bag over his shoulder which bears the flag of the new nation and its new name Timor Leste.
