War Medal associated with the service of Alfred William George Friedewald. Friedewald was born on 20 December 1920. He was working as an insurance clerk when he enlisted into the Australian Military Forces on 1 October 1941 at Arncliffe and allocated the service number of N237838. He was single and his next of kin was his father, Alfred Friedewald of 55 Washington Street Bexley. During this time Friedewald served with 9 Field Company which later became 26 Field Company Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) of the 1st Division. Transferring to the Australian Imperial Force on 20 July 1942 at Oatley, New South Wales Friedewald was given a new service number of NX118888. Alfred served in New Guinea from 12 August 1942 to 9 June 1944 with HQ RAE of Milne Force. After his return to Australia he transferred to HQ RAE 11 Division, later serving on New Britain between 6 September 1945 and 4 February 1946. Returning to Australia in February 1946 Friedewald was discharged on 3 July 1946 with the rank of corporal.
