Portrait of an Aboriginal serviceman, 2182 Private (Pte) Thomas Lyons, of Condoblin, NSW, who enlisted on 4 April 1916 in the 54th Battalion at Dubbo, NSW. Pte Lyons embarked in Sydney on HMAT Boorara (A 42) on 19 August 1916 bound for England. After training in the 14th Training Battalion at Bovington, England, he embarked for France and arrived for service in the 54th Battalion on 5 February 1917. Pte Lyons was wounded in action with gun shot wounds to both legs and one hand on 1 April 1917. After recovering from his wounds he rejoining his battalion only to be wounded again on 8 April 1918. Pte Lyons' wounds to his left knee were so severe he did not see service again and left England for Australia on 27 November 1918 on the troopship Ronic and was discharged on 7 May 1919.
