Sailor's pea jacket : Matrosen Johnsen, Kaiserliche Marine
German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) ordinary seaman's (matrosen) dark blue wool pea jacket. The double breasted jacket has a broad turn back lapel collar with stiff rectangular mid-blue collar patches sewn to it on both sides. Both of the vertical rows of four large buttons are missing. There are two black celluloid buttons holding a triangular piece of self fabric to the underside of the right lapel and a single button under the left lapel, so that the collar can be turned up and secured in bad weather. There is a welt pocket with a plain flap over each hip. An embroidered red cotton 'V' trade badge with a blue oval backing, for Vermessungsgast (rangefinders) is sewn to the upper left sleeve. The plain cuffs have a short slit at the back. The jacket is completely lined with dark blue serge. 'IMC / 1722 / 18' is stencilled in red paint on the lining in the middle of the back of the jacket. 'Johnsen' is printed in black on the white cotton name tape that is sewn onto the jacket below it. There is a welt pocket set into the lining on the left breast.
