Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait on F O Boyle on horseback, probably 267 Francis Oliver Boyle, a bandmaster from Sale, Victoria, prior to enlistment. With the rank of Lance Sergeant, Boyle embarked from Melbourne with B Squadron, 8th Light Horse, aboard HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 25 February 1915. While serving at Gallipoli he became ill with pleurisy, then was wounded when he returned to duty. He returned to Australia to recover and embarked again with the 26th Reinforcements, 8th Light Horse, aboard RMS Morea on 20 February 1917. During his service Boyle achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to Australia on 22 December 1918. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
