Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 3804 Private (Pte) Herbert Earl Kick. A labourer from Dunolly, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Kick embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 14th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. He later served with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB), the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column and then the 11th FAB. Later gassed he was evacuated to England and was still recovering when the Armistice was declared. He returned to Australia on 8 May 1919. Two brothers, 3089 Pte Alfred Solomon Kick and 14 Sergeant William George Kick also served overseas. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
