Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 14286 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Leonard Charles Elias, 1st Australian Wireless Squadron. A station hand from Summer Hill, NSW prior to enlistment, L Cpl Elias embarked with the rank of Driver (Dvr) from Melbourne on RMS Morea on 30 May 1916. On 29 April 1917 he died of typhus contracted in the field and was buried in the Basra War Cemetery, Iraq. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA15385 and DA15386.
