Description

Khaki wool twill tunic with stand and fall collar and oxidised brass Rising Sun (general service) badges at front collar edges secured with split brass pins. There are two sets of metal hooks and eye and a brown leatherette covered press stud to fasten the collar. Khaki wool shoulder straps are secured to the tunic with a small brown plastic button and each has voided oxidised brass 'AUSTRALIA' and '2' shoulder titles. Front of tunic has four patch pockets with pointed flaps and brown pressed leather buttons; the two breast pockets are box pleated and the pair below, attached to the waistband, are larger and expanding. Wide waistband is secured with a brass buckle. Tunic is fastened with five brown pressed leather buttons. At the top of each sleeve is a diamond, purple on white wool colour patch for 2 Pioneer battalion. There is a brass A indicating service at Gallipoli. Sleeves are gathered into straight cuffs secured with a brown plastic button. Above the cuff on the right sleeve are four embroidered cotton, blue on khaki, overseas service chevrons. The back of the tunic has a 50mm wide box pleat running down the centre from the base of the neck yoke. The tunic is unlined. At the inside lower right front is a patch pocket for a shell dressing.

History / Summary

Born in Bendigo, Victoria Private Robert Samuel Tuckerman (service number 742), then a barman working in Melbourne, enlisted in the AIF in March 1915, and was posted to C Company, 24th Battalion. The uinit sialed from Melbourne on HMAT Euripides on the 8h May 1915. After training in Egypt the battalion landed at Gallipoli on 30 August. Tuckerman transferred to B Company, 2nd Pioneer Battalion in Egypt on 4 March 1916, moving with them to France for service on the Western Front. Tuckerman survied the war without a recorded injury and returned to Australia 30April 1919. He was discharged on 29 June.

Pioneer battalions supported both the engineers by performing tasks which did not required the specialist equipment of the engineers, such as trench building, maintenance of roads and railways. They were also able to support the infantry battalion by fighting in the front line when required.
