Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 6177 Private (Pte) Herbert Chester Canham. A carrier from Kogarah, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Canham embarked with the 17th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Argyllshire on 31 October 1916. Following his arrival in England he was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia. On 28 January 1917, he succumbed to his illness and was buried in the Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
