Description
Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) John Linton Treloar, shortly before embarking for Europe as an administrative officer (non-flying) with the Australian Flying Corps (AFC). He had only recently recovered from dysentery and paratyphoid he contracted at Gallipoli serving as a sergeant with the 1st Division Headquarters. John Treloar, an Army staff clerk before the war, became head of the Australian War Records Section (AWRS) in May 1917 with the rank of Major. In 1920 he became the Director of the Australian War Memorial and was so until his death in 1952. During the Second World War he was given leave of absence and as a Lieutenant Colonel created and ran the Australian Army Military History Section (MHS).
