Freyberg addressing the troops amid the olives
Description
General Bernard Freyberg VC, a First World War hero, arrived on Crete with other soldiers from the New Zealand Division to command the British and Greek forces on the island. Freyberg was determined to inspire and encourage these forces.
This work depicts Freyberg addressing the Australian troops, who were defending Retimo airfield, amid the olive trees. The dark silhouette of Freyberg contrasts with the light helmets of the soldiers, creating an atmosphere of foreboding and apprehension.
