Studio portrait of 55 Private (Pte) Charles Edwin Williams wearing the uniform of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Pte Williams, of Violet Town, Vic, was one of the first in his district to enlist for service in the Boer War with the 1st Victorian Contingent in 1899. He was killed in action at Rensburg on 12 February 1900 as he went to the aid of his Sergeant, Neil Grant, who was also killed. His sacrifice is commemorated on a memorial in Violet Town, Vic.
