ALICE SPRINGS, AUSTRALIA. 1942-09-28. ALICE SPRINGS RELIES ON ITS WATER SUPPLY FROM UNDERGROUND SOAKAGE OF THE RIVER TODD. WATER IS PUMPED MAINLY FROM TWO ARMY WELLS ALONG A 2,000 FOOT PIPELINE TO TANKS ON A HILL ON THE SOUTHERN EXTREMITY OF THE TOWN. AS ALL OF THE TOWN LIES BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE TANKS THERE IS NO NEED FOR FURTHER PUMPING. THIS PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS PORTION OF THE TANK ON TOP OF BILLYGOAT HILL AND THE OUTWARD PIPELINE. PART OF THE TOWN MAY BE SEEN ON THE LEFT OF THE PHOTO.
