Description

Australian and New Zealand UH-1H ‘Huey’ Iroquois helicopters at Honiara International Airport, formerly Henderson Field, near Honiara. Australian Army Aviation (AAAvn) helicopter A2-377, left, belonging to 171 Squadron, 1st Aviation Regiment, had previously been used in Vietnam and in Sinai. Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) helicopter NZ3814, right, belonging to No. 3 Squadron, RNZAF had previously been deployed to East Timor. Four Australian UH-1H helicopters, deployed under Operation Anode, and four New Zealand UH-1H helicopters, deployed under Operation Rata, provided reconnaissance, transport and medical evacuation support to the multi-national Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The Australian and New Zealand crews worked closely together, including crewing each other’s helicopters. They were based at Henderson Field, the former Second World War airfield near Honiara, which was renamed Honiara International Airport in September 2003.
