Description

View of the side of HMAS Diamantina [II], moored in Honiara port, Guadalcanal. HMAS Diamantina, commissioned in February 2002, is a Huon class coastal minesweeper, constructed with a single-piece hull of glass reinforced plastic, and based on the Italian Gaeta class. It was used to patrol remote areas of the Solomon Islands, and as a base for a team of clearance divers who helped decommission explosives and weapons, as part of Operation Anode, Australia’s military and policing contribution to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The previous HMAS Diamantina [I], commissioned in 1945, operated in the Solomon Islands during the Second World War. A Balikpapan class amphibious heavy landing craft, HMAS Brunei, is visible behind HMAS Diamantina.
