Description

A local man sits on a fuel barge in front of Royal Australian Navy ships in Honiara port: HMAS Diamantina (left, largely obscured), and, behind the Diamantina, HMAS Betano (left, partly obscured) and Brunei (right). The Diamantina [II] is a Huon class coastal mine hunter, and the Betano and Brunei are both Balikpapan class heavy landing craft. They were deployed as part of Operation Anode, Australia’s contribution to a multi-national military and policing intervention, the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The presence of Australia’s naval contingent in Honiara, capital of the Solomon Islands, which had been scene of some of the worst violence, served as a powerful indication of the military support backing up the RAMSI’s police operation.
