Gardiner, Percy (Private); Gardiner, Bertie (Private)
Collection relating to two brothers, 854 Private Percy Gardiner, 13 Battalion and 3048 Private Bertie Gardiner. The bulk of the collection comprises correspondence written by Percy and Bertie to their parents and sisters, 1914-1916. It also includes official correspondence to their parents relating to their deaths in action, 1916, photographs and newspaper cuttings.
The majority of the letters are addressed to Mrs and Mrs Gardiner, with several also addressed to their sisters Ethel and Hilda and unnamed brothers. Most of the correspondence is from Percy containing endearments to his mother and brief descriptions about his medical condition, his travels in England and questions about doings at home in Australia. The letters are succinct and mostly under 1 page in length. The letters from Bertie are also fairly brief with one written to his sister in 1916 wishing her happy birthday. Bertie was killed in July 1916 and Percy a month later in August 1916.
