Lensatic Compass
Solid brass Military Lensatic Compass. The compass card has both the standard 0 - 360 degree scale, as well as the 0 - 64 Mil scale (one yard at 1,000 yards). The cardinal points are luminous for easy glow-in-the-dark viewing. It features a standard glass bezel with two lines at 45 degree angles. The bezel also rotates with detents so that changes for the heading reference is known without looking at the compass. The front sight has a magnifier to simultaneously view the magnetic heading when taking a sighting. Folding the sight down operates a needle lift mechanism to protect the compass bearing. Markings - F - L; BROAD ARROW; 0 0 ;No 88097; 1917.
The compass was part of the personal equipment that was captured from a German Officer by J H Thomas, who served with 4th Battalion, Australian Infantry Force in France in 1917.
