Associated with the service of Chief Petty Officer Michael Barry Apperley who served as part of the second contingent to the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM II) from 7 June to 12 December 1993. Apperley was part of the Australian Movement Control Group, known as ‘movers’, working with United Nations military and civil authorities to coordinate air and sea operations in Somalia. UNOSOM II (1993 -1995) was the second United Nations operation in Somalia after the country collapsed into civil war in the early 1990s. Its role was to ‘use all necessary means’ to establish a secure environment for humanitarian relief operations in Somalia.
