Model 1911A1 Pistol : Major A S Mann, 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment
Model 1911A1 semi-automatic pistol. Manufactured from ordnance steel with a blued finish and has brown plastic pistol grips attached by slotted head screws to the frame. The top slide is marked UNITED STATES PROPERTY over the serial number and M1911A1 US ARMY on the right with ITHACA GUN CO. INC, ITHACA NY on the left.
This pistol was carried and used by Major A S Mann when he won the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in Korea while serving with the First Royal Australian Regiment during Operation Blaze. Major Mann went on to command, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, the first contingent of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam. The pistol was retained by Major Mann's batman upon his return to Australia with instructions to hand it into the Quarter-Master. The batman kept the pistol but gave it to Colonel Adamson to transfer it to the Memorial.
