Pilots from 75 Squadron RAAF are welcomed back to Al Udeid airbase by Group Captain William Henman after taking part in the Squadron's final combat mission over the Middle East area of operations. Present at the time of the photograph were Wing Commander Melvin E G Hupfeld (far right), Wing Commander Peter Speiss, Squadron Leader Eldridge, Flying Officer (FO) Sander, Group Captain William Henman, FO Anthony D'Alessandro and Flight Lieutenant Derek Thresher. The Squadron, consisting of fourteen F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, operated from Al Udeid airbase during Operation Falconer. 75 Squadron's initial role was to provided protection to Coalition aircraft including air to air refuelers and intelligence aircraft. The Squadron's role was later extended to include to strike missions against military targets including tanks, artillery and anti-aircraft systems. 75 Squadron operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment to the Coalition forces assembled to disarm Iraq.
