Grow your own: supply your own cookhouse
Second World War British poster, designed by Abram Games, aims at encouraging the public to grow their own food. The poster depicts a table above a vegetable garden, with the legs of the table being the garden fork and spade which continue into a dining fork and knife. The table is set with a plate of food, a mug and a soldier's hat at the side. Abram Games (1914-1996) was a British graphic designer. The style of his work – refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries – earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. From 1942, during the Second World War, Games' service as the Official War Artist for posters resulted in 100 or so posters being produced by him. His work was recognised for its striking colour, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography'.
