Studio portrait of 3327A Lance Corporal (LCpl) Edwin Arthur (Ted) Hubbard, 53rd Battalion, of "Seatonville", Maryvale, NSW. LCpl Hubbard enlisted on 29 June 1915 and five months later embarked aboard HMAT Euripides. He served in France before being killed in action on 19 July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles, aged 22 years. One of numerous casualties from this fierce battle, LCpl Hubbard was buried in what became known as VC Corner Australian Cemetery at Fromelles, France. As a footnote to the circumstances of Hubbard's death, a statement was later made by Private E B Taylor also of the 53rd Battalion, "I knew LCpl Hubbard who was in 7th Platoon, B Company and came from Maryville [sic], near Wellington, NSW. At Fromelles on 19 July 1916, I saw his body near the German line. He was dead and had been shot through the head".
