Description

Studio portrait of 1637 Private Albert Bertram (Bert) Collins, who was born at Tomingey, NSW, and one of two sons of William and Ellen Collins of Burrandong, NSW. On 2 December 1915, Bert Collins, together with his brother Bede, enlisted in the AIF at Wellington, NSW. Both were assigned to the 54th Battalion, and his brother Bede was assigned the previous regimental number 1636. Bede was later transferred to the 56th Battalion. Both Bert and Bede Collins embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 14 April 1916. They saw action in France before Bert was killed during the Second Battle of Bullecourt on 15 May 1917. Bede Collins survived the war and returned to Australia on 2 June 1919.
