Informal portrait of Major Herbert John Rose, smoking a pipe, outside his tent, an unidentified servant boy is sitting next to him on the ground. Reverend Rose, a Church of England chaplain, went to the Sudan and Boer Wars. He embarked for the Sudan in March 1885 and returned in June 1885. He went to South Africa as a chaplain with the Second Contingent, Australian Horse; and was attached to the South African Field Force.
