Description
Troops being transported by a river steamer towing an Arab mahala on the Shat-el-Arab River. The annual overflowing of the mighty Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and their confluent, the Shat-el-Arab, during the summer months, inundates much of the Lower Mespotamia (now Iraq). The floods of 1915 were particularly severe and necessitated an almost entire reliance on water transport for the conveyance of troops and supplies, which was carried out by both modern and native craft.
