Description
Afghan traders with Australian soldiers (Captain Lachlan Simond seated), "Bernie's Market". The market takes place inside a Dutch military base, where it was developed to improve relations with local Afghan communities. Talking about this work in a 2008 interview Charles Green explained: "What we're looking at is Orientalist painting, of European artists going to the East."
Recalling these traditions, Brown and Green evoke broader and deeper historical interactions between the East and the West.
