Description
The New South Wales Soudan (Sudan) Contingent of 1885 prepares to participate in the in the Peace Day march alongside returned soldiers from the First World War. Identified third from left is Reverend Herbert John Rose, a veteran of the Sudan and Boer Wars. A Church of England chaplain, Reverend Rose embarked for the Sudan with the Contingent on 3 March 1885 and returned in June 1885. He served in South Africa as a chaplain with the Second Contingent, Australian Horse; and was attached to the South African Field Force.
