Description

Studio portrait of Private Tom Gunning of the New South Wales Sudan Contingent wearing his khaki service dress. On 3 March 1945 he gave a copy of this photograph to each surviving member of the New South Wales Contingent in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the departure of the contingent to the Sudan. The rifle which he is holding is an Alexander Henry rifle fitted with a saw edged back bayonet. A resident of Mosman, Sydney, he died in 1949 and provided a bequest which was used for the installation of an appropriate plaque on the rocks of the Tarpeian Way, to commemorate the date and departure point of the contingent.
