C.1942. PORT SIDE VIEW OF THE DESTROYER USS MUGFORD (DD-389). NOTE THE OPEN MOUNTINGS FOR THE AFTER 5 INCH/38 GUNS, DESIGNED AS A WEIGHT SAVING MEASURE. 20MM OERLIKON AA GUNS ARE FITTED JUST FORWARD OF THE BRIDGE, BY THE AFTER TRUNKING OF THE FUNNEL AND ABOVE NO 3 GUN. NOTE THE TWO BANKS OF TORPEDO TUBES IN THE WAIST. AN EARLY RADAR AERIAL, SC OR SC-1, IS FITTED AT THE FOREMAST. USS MUGFORD PICKED UP SURVIVORS FROM THE AUSTRALIAN HOSPITAL SHIP, CENTAUR, WHICH HAD BEEN TORPEDOED IN AUSTRALIAN WATERS. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION)
