BASU RIVER VALLEY, NEW GUINEA. 1944-05-14. JIMMY WAN, SON OF WAN JIN WAH, FEEDING HIS FATHER'S FOWLS IN A CHINESE GARDEN APPROXIMATELY 7 MILES FROM LAE. NINE FAMILIES FROM THE AREA ESTABLISHED THE FARMS BY CLEARING VIRGIN JUNGLE. THE FARMS, TAKEN FROM THE SETTLERS BY JAPANESE FORCES, ARE NOW UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE AUSTRALIAN NEW GUINEA ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT WHO HAVE A TRADING ARRANGEMENT WITH THE CHINESE AND OPERATE NATIVE LABOUR ON A SECTION OF THE LAND.
