| Description | Portrait of an unidentified Australian soldier wearing a tin helmet and sheepskin vest and mittens to ward off the winter cold. The winter of 1916-17 was one of the coldest on record for over a decade on the Somme. From the Thuillier collection of glass plate negatives. Taken by Louis and Antoinette Thuillier in Vignacourt, France during the period 1916 to 1918. |
