Description

Mr Chapman discusses: Childhood and Prewar employment as a surveyor, enlisting in 1916 and joining 3rd Field Company, 1st Division in May 1917, life on the ship on the way to England, training and being sent to France, going into action and involvement in reconnaissance near the Passchendaele, reaction to large number of casualties and men coming into contact with mustard gas, Hill 60; low temperatures during winter, going to the Somme, 1st Battalion saving Hazebrouck, Australians helping Americans near the Hindenberg Line, working long hours in the field during the day and then drawing plans at night under fire at times, reflections on the war, postwar employment, economic depression, interrogation of German Prisoner for information about 5 inch gun.
